How did Jews of Jesus' time and during the time of the early Church determine whether someone was merely sick/disabled/etc. as opposed to truly demon-possessed? What was the line between the two? For, it seems that, in many cases, these two states overlap. For instance, sometimes one man is described as "blind" or "mute" while another man at another time is described having both conditions but because of demon-possession. Would there have been any way to tell the difference between someone who was merely sick/disabled v. someone who was demon-possessed? Could this have only been determined by the Holy Spirit or was there some other way that men then used?
